Being a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, often hit by cyclones, Mauritius is known by many as a surfer’s paradise island.
Tamarin, a small village just south of Flic en Flac, on the west coast, is one of the
only beaches in Mauritius where
the coral reefs don’t
protect the beach. Together with the close by river mouth, the entire bay of Tamarin becomes a perfect spot!
The availability and abundance of beach rentals close by have contributed to the village’s tourism success.
Walking around Tamarin’s main street and surrounding, will make you feel like you were an actor in a movie scene with surfers from all ages and horizons kicking back after a couple of waves and beers, next to the local surf shop or checking out the local tour operators for their next stop in these beach holidays.
Always wished I knew how to surf. Might have to learn and take a trip sometime.

for the more experienced surfers, there’s a nother spot but far more dangerous, called Gris Gris, near Souillac on the South Western coast.

Any time of the year is good for visiting Mauritius, But December is an excellent month.
December is the summer in Mauritius, so expect hot weather.
As December falls inside the cyclone season, you might get lucky and be able to surf some waves formed by a cyclone , when it’s still far away of course and pretty safe.
Where are you planning on staying?
As far as i remember you can rent a board in Tamarin and Belle Mare (north east) where there is a kitesurfing and surfing school.
Depending on the resort you’ll be staying, they might have windsurfing boards as well as regular surf boards.

Hi , We are at La Pirogue Wolmar and I have been trying to link up a surf tour to Tamarin or One Eye , Le Morne from there , car Hire is pricey , do you know any tour operators who would want to assist a Surfer from South Africa to get a wave or 2 during one day in the week I am there ?
